The sacred black wood of Lord Murugan, for the japa you keep every day

In the temples of Tamil Nadu, karungali, the deep black ebony, has been held sacred for generations. Devotees believe it carries the strength of Lord Murugan's Vel, and so it has long been worn by those who seek his courage and his protection.
Black, here, is not darkness. It is the stillness that remains when the noise of the day falls away: dense, quiet, unshakeable. Your mala holds that stillness in 108 beads for the sacred count, and one guru bead that always brings you back to where you began.
Wear it, and your devotion has somewhere to rest. Devotees who keep karungali close speak of:
For the devotee who chants every day, the seeker taking their first 108, or someone you love beginning the path.
These are traditional beliefs, lovingly kept, and not guaranteed results.
The first time: on a Tuesday (Mangal's day, sacred to Murugan) or Skanda Shashti; if you wear it for Shani, begin on a Saturday:
Every day after: rest the mala on your right middle finger and turn one bead with your thumb for each chant, starting beside the guru bead. When you reach the guru bead, turn the mala around; never cross it.
The fit: about 34–36 inches around, it rests softly at your chest and can be wrapped twice on the wrist. Each bead is firmly knotted, so it keeps its shape and never stretches.
Care for it the way you care for your practice: gently, every day.
Many stores sell karungali. Here is what you get only with Arutra:
Is karungali good for Mangal dosha?
In Vedic astrology, yes. Through its bond with Lord Murugan, lord of Mangal, it is one of the most widely worn traditional remedies for Mangal (Chevvai) dosha; begin on a Tuesday. Many also wear it through Sade Sati and Shani Mahadasha, beginning on a Saturday. For a strong dosha, wear it alongside your astrologer's guidance.
Which deity is karungali connected to?
Above all, Lord Murugan. The Tamil tradition holds this wood dear to him. Devotees of Shiva, Hanuman and Shani wear it too, so chant the mantra your heart is already devoted to.
How do I know it's genuine?
Look closely: real ebony is natural wood, so no two beads share the exact grain or shade. Rub one bead on a damp white cloth: genuine karungali leaves no colour. And scan the QR on your card to see this batch's lab report and packing video.
Can women wear it? Can I wear it with rudraksha?
Yes to both. Many women wear karungali every day, and it is often paired with rudraksha. If your family follows particular customs, please honour them.
Can I sleep or bathe with it on?
We'd suggest taking it off, as water and friction wear the thread and dull the wood over time.
